The Picture of Dorian Gray Romanesque? I want to write a comparative essay between "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and another novel. This novel may be more similar to Dorian Gray in the theme, characters, plot, etc.
Anyone have any ideas for my second novel?
Dorian Gray has fundamentally to do with the corrupt soul, capturing life in art, the influences of others and moving from good to evil.
Maybe something Camus, like the plague. The thesis of your essay might be the way Dorian Gray, written before the war, has caused its own demise, while the plague, written after the war, killing millions and seems to kill at random without question the morality of the victim.
Why do not you Dante?
His three "novels" (they are written in terza rima, but I think that novels) are the metaphorical journey of the soul from evil and sin, hell, heaven, which represents redemption. One of the main themes of Dante is that you have the total choice of your own actions, and that no one controls your place in heaven or hell, but you. This is similar to Dorian Gray as Dorian's vanity is his own downfall, even if its environment is often toxic.
That's all I could think of, sorry!
Oh, after the Second World War .... then sorry, I could not help.
