Plot

The film is set nine years after the mysterious failure of the mission of exploration ship 800 feet USSC Discovery One Jupiter (shown in 2001: A Space Odyssey) in which four astronauts have died and another has disappeared mysteriously in a large alien Monolith orbit around Jupiter. Dr. Heywood Floyd - who was the director of the National Council of Astronautics (NCA) during the Discovery mission - was the scapegoat, and has since left the ANC to become president of the university .

Friction is growing between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, and both nations are preparing for missions to determine what happened to Discovery One. But although the Soviet Alexei Leonov will be ready before the new American ship, the Soviets have American astronauts to help investigate the problems with the HAL 9000 supercomputer board, and mitigate the diplomatic problems related to boarding gear U.S. space. The U.S. government reluctantly agrees to a joint mission from orbit, Discovery is destined to crash into Jupiter's moon Io in a few years.

Floyd, who feels responsible for the mission failed, the volunteers of the mission itself and recruited two experts in discovery: Dr. Walter Curnow, one of its designers and builders, and Dr. Chandra, who established the laboratory of the 9000 series of artificial intelligence supercomputers.

The objective of the joint mission is threefold: to find the reason for the failure of the mission to investigate the Monolith in orbit around Jupiter, and to explain the disappearance of David Bowman. They suspect that much of this information is locked in the abandoned spaceship Discovery One, was onboard computer HAL 9000.

Upon arrival of Leonov in the Jovian system, Dr. Floyd wakes from hibernation at the beginning by the Soviet crew, because they detected chemical signatures of life on the moon Europa. An automatic sensor detects something suggestive of life, but is inexplicably destroyed in an explosion of electromagnetic radiation before close-up photos can be taken. Dr. Floyd suspect it is a warning from someone - or something - stay away from Europa.

The Discovery One is found abandoned, but in good condition, orbiting near Jupiter's moon Io. After the space walk on it, Curnow reactive its onboard systems, and Chandra restarts the computer HAL 9000 ("HAL"), which had been disabled before the Monolith had been found. The monolith is then solved in the Lagrange point between Jupiter and Io. Cosmonaut Max Brailovsky travel a clove of EVA, but is killed by a burst of power that emerges from the Monolith and heads into space towards the Earth.

A series of scenes that follow Dave Bowman, who has been transformed into a being incorporeal, travels to Earth. It appears on the TV screen of his widow and says his final goodbyes and visits his terminally ill mother senile in a nursing home, combing his hair, to his great joy, as he had done during his childhood. She was found dead in his bed shortly after.

Chandra discovers the reason for failure of HAL: he had become paranoid after NSC controllers ordered him to hide in Bowman and Poole, knowing that the Discovery mission was the mystery Monolith. This was in conflict with the basic function of HAL: the careful handling and distribution of information without concealment or distortion. Dr. Floyd is disgusted and denies any knowledge of the secret directive.

Meanwhile, tensions between the United States and Soviet Union have increased to what is "technically at war." The government orders American Floyd.
