Kings Dominion is an amusement park in Doswell, VA Hanover County, 23 miles (37 km) north of Richmond and 83 miles (134 km) south of Washington, DC on Interstate 95.
Part of 400 acres (1.6 km2) park is currently owned by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, and was the former Paramount Parks chain that Cedar Fair acquired from CBS Corporation on June 30, 2006. The park was named after its sister park, Kings Island in Kings Mills, Ohio, which opened in 1972. The two parks were built and owned by Kings Entertainment Co. aka Keco. While Kings Island has been appointed as a combination of Kings Mills (location) and Coney Island (theme park that was built to replace), the name of Kings Dominion was more than likely a reference to the nickname Virginia as "Old Dominion".

History
In their early history as Kings Dominion (1975-89)

Kings Dominion officially opened in 1975 with 15 rides. However, in 1974, the park had a "soft" (partial, low) as the opening attraction now defunct Lion Country Safari and junior roller coaster, now called Scooby Doo's rooler Coaster. Also in 1974, the park has completed the mountains Rebel Yell roller racing (designed by John Allen of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company), but it would not open until 1975 with the rest of the park. When the park began in the spring of 1975, it also included a log flume, antique cars, steam trains, and a collection of rides. Another roller coaster, Galaxy, was located in the Grove next to the artificial Lake Charles, which took up 10 acres (40,000 m2) of the park property. In addition, Kings Dominion 1/3-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower, which has an observation deck from which visitors can see the whole park was opened by the first full season park. In addition to the Lion Country Safari, the theme park areas have been called The Happy Land of Hanna-Barbera, Old Virginia, and Coney Island (renamed Candy Apple Grove before next season).
Kings Dominion added rollercoaster fourth, Schwarzkopf shuttle loop known as King Kobra, 1977. The King Kobra featured a 50-ton launch weight against abandonment and was the first launched roller coaster park. It was in the park for nine seasons before being transferred to Jolly Roger Amusement Park in Ocean City, Maryland. After several relocations, it continues to operate today as Katapul at Hopi Hari in Brazil. Also in 1977, Kings Dominion is one of the parks used as sets for the film Rollercoaster.
In addition to King Kobra, Kings Dominion opened a campground and its famous mountain Lost World before the late 1970s. Originally, The Lost World featured three rounds: a flume ride called Journey to Atlantis, an attraction for children known as Land Dooz, called Time and a rotor shaft. Journey to Atlantis has been replaced by the Haunted.
