Pygmalion

PygmalionPygmalion???

in my literature class, we have to read this until I read Pygmalion acts1-3, but im not really understand what is going o Can you explain that at least in Act 3 is about!? ? Please n thank u !?!?!

"Pygmalion" is on the efforts of Professor Higgins to teach Eliza to speak plain English so that he can make him pass for a member of the upper classes at a dance society.

It is essentially a tent in Act 3 to see if it will work. What makes the act is funny is that although Higgins taught Eliza to have an upper-class accent, he did not teach grammar explained that some words are not used in good company, if it surprises everyone with how it taks about someone trying to "make" his aunt, for example ("to someone is English slang for murder, but no would not have been a household word in the upper classes of England pre-WWI). And she talks about gin being "mother's milk to her aunt (gin is not a drink of the upper class at that time, and certainly not for the ladies). It also has all the impact when she uses the word "blood" was considered a very rude word at that time, and certainly would not have been used by the ladies (he shocked the public stage in 1913 as well) .

The impact of the scene is difficult to understand for a modern audience, because morals are far more relaxed today, and we use all sorts of slang and profanity epressions for granted these days, nobody wants be particularly surprised that the old aunt Anone liked a drink, but these things are not usual among the upper classes at that time, so the scene is funny.

To add something to the first person who answered, this game is also on the myth of a sculptor who fell in love with a statue he made. Themes of evolution can be accepted and learning what is really important beyond the rules of the superficial society of what is beautiful and what is accepted.

At the time that the play is set in there was a very strong class distinctions in England on the way people spoke. Henry Higgins is a phoneticist and explores forms of expression of the Cockneys. It is not behaving the way it should, according to its position in society. Read the preface on the attached link.

I love this piece. I did a scene from it for a workshop to act.

Incidentally, Pygmalion = My Fair Lady.
