It was "tongue-in-cheek" about how gays are treated. They should be (pretend) a male "macho" in order to live a normal life. The rumor that the Village People "are all gay was a and complete falsehood. I think the leader was gay, but the rest are not. This rumor has been perpetuated by other gays. One of the Vice-Presidents of origin actually committed suicide because his life was ruined because of this rumor.
