French Connection? My maiden name is Neal grandmother and traditions of the family that has the name is of French origin. Supposedly, the original name was De Carneal (or a variant of that spelling). During the French Revolution a family of brothers have decided to flee France. A brother came to America and his arrival, he decided to adopt the name of Neal. Any information regarding the name Of Carneal and it is possible French origin would be useful. So if anyone has heard this story repeated in their family would like to hear about it.
I received a so-called The Marquess of Granae (spelling uncertain) who had fled Ireland to avoid decapitation, and thence to Quebec. Unfortunately, I have yet to prove this piece of family lore, though I have these lines of French 1850s. I think I may have to go and search the records of the church to obtain evidence shoebox.
Do not be discouraged, however. Family Lore is fallible, but I checked or clarified ten of the twelve stories of family lore, with only one and a battle of Bunker Hill / Sons of Liberty history to prove or disprove. It can be done, going back in time, only one document at a time, inch by inch, from decade to decade.
Good hunting and good luck.
This has ancestry to Carneal:
Scotland: the name of the Housing Land Carneille near Dunfermline, Fife.
Perhaps an altered spelling of North German Ka (r) Nehl, a working name for Spicer, cinnamon Kaneel "
There was nothing on De Carneal on Ancestry.com.
How many years have you been in your research?
This question is difficult to answer

If you can not trace on paper, opt for a DNA test which will prove no link French. I opted for www.familytreedna.com, who sent me a written report and gave me my own web page on their site. It is fun and exciting!
