EquilibriumThe Punctuated Equilibrium: Provable? or unprovable?

Theory

Speaking at Hobart and Smith College in 1980 Wilson, Stephen J. Gould, writer and lecturer evolutionist, has noted:
"Every paleontologist knows that most species do not change. They get a little bigger or bumpier but they remain the same species and is stasis. And yet this remarkable stasis has generally been ignored because no data. If they do not change the trend should not talk about it. "

Professor Niles Eldridge of the Museum of Natural History matters as Darwinian evolution. In theory, natural selection produced a series of incremental changes slowly transform one type of life in another. The problem has always been the fossil record. intermediate fossils are missing. In the past, evolutionists simply dismissed the case saying it is incomplete. It says Eldridge, is no longer the case. Geologists have now studied the rock layers representing five hundred million years, and fossils remain the same. These creatures have long sought transient as illusory as ever. If the fossil record is not at fault, then it must be the theory.

The manifesto could not be denied, fossils do not support the theory. Gould and Eldridge solution was to reorganize the theory of conflict so that it would be over with the fossil record. They called their new proposal "punctuated equilibrium."

So what is punctuated equilibrium? Gould and Punctuated equilibrium is the explanation of how Eldridge large, stable populations could produce new species. The species as a whole does not change, but they believe that the isolated segments could, in good conditions. They call this "branching" in different species, as opposed to a case that any change in another.

Finches of the Galapagos Islands to help illustrate their theory. At one point, a species of finch has made his home in the Galapagos Islands. This species probably originated in South America, then migrated to the islands. More than likely, the water level rose until the birds could not fly the distance between the islands.

Originally, theorists say, the population Finch posted much of the variation in their beaks. When the birds are isolated, they had to do with the resources that were available on their island. Those lucky enough to find the food they could eat to their particular type of bill survived. Those who could not feed on the local rate is dead. The type of bill perished with them.

As you can imagine, after generations of this process "beak-cleaning," the only thing would be a pure strain of beak well suited to the source of each island local food. The distance between the Galapagos Islands prevented interbreeding between populations of finches. cumulated differences, and separate the species developed.

In short, the "punctuated phase" punctuated equilibrium occurs when a relatively small segment becomes physically isolated from the rest of the population. Gould and Eldridge recognize the only place where any variation or mutation has a chance to survive in a small, isolated, peripheral population. Any large population of organisms have a natural tendency towards stabilization. Making a solitary gene, a recipient, is likely to be engulfed in a massive gene pool.

So how long is the period punctuated by variations / mutations? "Five to fifty thousand years," said Eldridge. "Hundreds of thousands to millions of years," says Gould.

This creates the punctuation in the punctuated equilibrium? same variation in Darwinian evolution - or mutations culled by natural selection. Robyn Conder Broyles To quote in December 1997 article entitled Punctuated E.
