What causes dark circles under eyes?

First, it is very important to distinguish what is meant by "dark circles under the eyes" of the normal dark color of the skin of the eyelid that is present in all people. Look at all the faces and the study of eyelid skin and you notice that the lower eyelid skin is darker than the skin of the cheek and the rest of the face.

There is a very simple reason for this: the skin of the lower eyelid is the thinnest skin on the face. The average lower eyelid skin 593 microns thick, while on the chin for example, the average skin-2544 microns and the skin on the lower eyelid on average 4 to 5 times thinner than skin on other areas. The lower eyelid skin is so thin that you can actually see the color of the eyelid muscle which lies directly under the skin. The color of this muscle is actually purple lid, so the dark color of the eyelid skin usually has a bluish or purplish. The presence of small blue veins in the eyes of many people also contribute to the dark.

Dark colored lower eyelid skin can not be corrected by a blepharoplasty. The blepharoplasty removes fat and sometimes skin, but the skin of the lower eyelid that covers the muscle remains dark and the color remains after blepharoplasty. Laser treatments can not correct color NORMAL DARK lower eyelid skin. Lasers only remove the pigmentation damage caused by the sun, they do not go deep enough to effect the color caused by the color of muscle under the skin. Worse laser treatments can de-pigment
the skin of the eyelid and cause a white "raccoon" appearance on the eyelids.

Dark circles under the eyes are very different color of black skin and eyelid are caused by a mechanism very different. Dark circles under the eyes refers to a vacuum or shadow under the lower lid, just above the bone of the orbit and begins at the corner of the lower eyelid near the nose and runs along the edge of the cavity of the eye to the off side of the cheek.

The medical term for the dark circle under the eye is the Nasojugal Fold. As we age, the dark circle under the eye becomes deeper and more and runs down and into the cheek. This deep, darker circles under the eyes is the call.
