A Shot In The Dark

A Shot In The DarkHow to choose new fixtures? or is it really a Shot in the Dark?

Anyone who has remodeled their home or has begun construction of a new house from scratch knows the diversity of choice must be made before the project is completed. The last house I built, my 15 year old son and I lived plans for 11 months. We sat up nights imagining the flow of each room, where the light switches would go, where to hang the lights, what color to paint the walls, the choice of flooring. All aspects have affected the project in some way. So we thought it all carefully. We walked foundations (my son was made the day her 4 foot footings have been dug), measured the frame, usually the contractor ran mad, but we were sure we had all the answers to the week before the final punch list walk through the contractor has asked ... .. what do you do about door handles? Door knobs? You mean the doors are not supplied with the buttons? No and cabinets do not come with ceiling lights, shelves and supports either!

Moreover, as the house took shape, we realized that all thought we had put in lights went by the wayside when the premises were developed. Corners were dark, the walls had to be lit for all that we wanted to ask and be able to actually see the kitchen light cast a shadow over the counter that would have made the kitchen into the dark art acquired. These defects are more common in new construction, but are equally important in a restoration, because now you can correct any problems associated with the lighting in your existing home, with some thought, planning and using people who know the lighting. Choosing a lighting fixture and planning for the right type of lighting may seem like a challenge, but one of your greatest sources of information may be your dealer. Unlike big box stores, their lighting department with staff who do not work in the department of modern plumbing, lighting, specialty and many dealers Internet can be invaluable in providing advice to help you make those decisions easier. They may be your best source for hanging heights, style, color, power requirements, power, etc. Many can assist you in positioning of each device by developing a lighting plan. Even with this help you still need to live the plan, imagine how each unit will have an impact on your living space. Are we back in the light of too little or six? The lighting can be expensive and a very sustainable plan. So, plan carefully and seek advice.

The devices are generally fall under one or more of these four categories:

1.decorative (purely ornamental)

2. task (necessary to make clear work surfaces and illuminate rooms)

3. protection and / or security lighting (outdoor fixtures such as floods, spots, the porch)

4. focus (to wash a wall or shine on a specific area of non-traffic)

5. ambient (background)

6. general lighting (the misc. categories covering everything else and that is where "Murphy's law" will prevail because you will not realize you needed it until its too late)

Accessories also come in different types:

chandeliers

Pendants

Projectors

runway lights

wall or ceiling-mounted (particularly in the bathrooms)

fluorescent

Cabinet or lighting under the cabinets.

Most of these need no further description here, but should be considered individually so that you will not forget that you need. What everyone does need is the selection, placement, scale, size, wiring / switching and most important must match your style sensibility. In addition, these days, more and more of us are increasingly concerned about the environment and operating costs of a house. So ask questions about what light.
