Honda Odyssey 1997-1998 (U.S.)
The Odyssey was introduced in 1995 as the first Honda minivan based on the Accord platform, with a 4-cylinder engine, all the antilock brake discs, all wishbone suspension and a four-speed automatic transmission with a steering column-mounted lever and a Hill-hold, marketed as Grade Logic. The design featured monocoque construction, cushions, dual gloveboxes, dual zone heating and cooling capacity by 20 per cent higher than a system of agreement (overhead control rear adjusting fan speed, and the main control switch on the front seat passenger), standard rear swing open rather than sliding doors, and a third row seat which could fold and fall into a compartment under the floor of the spare tire carried inside Spacesaver on the right side, rear of the cabin.
Honda Odyssey sold the first generation in two trim levels. The LX accommodated seven passengers with two front bucket seats, a removable middle bench seats three, and two-third row seat. FORMER housed six passengers (using two removable captain's chairs in the second row instead of the bench) and additional equipment available, including a roof rack, alloy wheels, power seat Driver Height sunroof, keyless entry, fog lights (later model years), side moldings and body-color mirrors, lights, and 20-watt AM / FM / cassette six-speaker audio system.
In a cooperation agreement between Honda and Isuzu, Isuzu offered an unbranded version of the Odyssey Isuzu Oasis 19961999. In turn, Honda and Acura offered the Rodeo and Trooper rebadged as the Passport and SLX, respectively.
In 1996, New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) has increased the number of car license, the approval of the first generation Odyssey for the use of the taxi fleet in the city of the Odyssey recommended by the quick-seven year old son of a member of TLC Advisory Committee. Initial identification of test pilots have advantages over so widespread Chevrolet Caprice and Ford Crown Victoria, including taxi over tall (for a better view of the road), headroom, rear legs, footroom rear (front wheel drive Odyssey with a flat floor) and the cargo space on the sedans, as well as air-conditioning vents in the rear, the sedan is not offered.
Reception
At its inception, the Odyssey of the car won the Japan of the Year (Special Category) and the RJC New Car of the Year. In September 1997, the Odyssey had sold over 300,000 units, becoming the fastest-selling Honda cars and beat the record Civic. The Odyssey was Wheels magazine Car of the Year for 1995. At the European launch of the Odyssey, which was marketed as the shuttle, the British former Grand Prix driver Jonathan Palmer described his handling the equality of all living "executive".
In a survey of Ownership 1995 survey, 98% of respondents felt that the handling of the Odyssey as above average, 50.3 percent of engine power rating to be good and 25 percent wanted a more powerful engine . A review later, the first generation Odyssey summarized market reception to the mini-van:
