Dracula MovieThere have been lots of movies with and about Dracula, no question. There have been far too many films about vampires. Also no question. However, I'm really quite pressed to think of a film that really deals with the origons of Dracula. "Bram Stoker's Dracula" way back in 1992 sort of touched on his origons, but not really much.

No now Universal Studios is apparently going to do just that. An origons of Dracula movie. DRACULA BEGINS! Ok, that's not really the title. The good folks over at Cinema Confidential give us this:

The script will tell of the origins of Dracula where vampire mythology will mix with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler. The trade describes Dracula in the story as a "flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war, repositioning him more as a vengeful hero than the monster seen in Bram Stoker's classic novel."
I think this sounds great. I'm not 100% sold on the idea of trying to show "The Impaler" as some sort of good guy hero... but I guess every vilain has his fall at some point. But man... if they turn this into another Van Helsing I'm gonna walk out.

This is just getting sad. The Halo project is in shambles right now. Remember this announcement from the studios way back in early 2005?:

Variety reports that 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures have closed their deal to make a movie based on Microsoft's hit video game Halo, with plans for a tentpole release in the summer of 2007.
Yeah... well here we are near the end of the summer of 2006. And what do we have? Nothing.

We have no cast, and most importantly we have NO DIRECTOR YET!!!!!

Don't hold your breath for a summer 2007 release date. Not having a director yet... a FULL YEAR after they announced the project is bad bad bad news no matter which way you try to spin it. It either means one of three things:

1) They can't find a decent director who will take a video game project and they're stuck in total limbo right now with nothing happening.

2) The script that they announced was "completed" last year was actually total crap and they're just working on trying to redo it into something that actually works.

or what would be even WORSE,

3) They're proceeding with the project without the guidance of the director. This means right now important film decisions are being made by the wrong people that an actual director will have to walk in and just accept.

This isn't like the M. Night Shyamalan and Harry Potter situation. I'm not saying a director needs 100% total control over a project at all. But to start working on pre-production elements without a director to guide it would show just how little Bungie knows about making movies.

Look, maybe this film will turn out to be amazing. Maybe it will win Oscars. Maybe Kings and Queens of ages past will rise from the dead just to watch this piece of cinematic history. Maybe. But right now this project is a joke. A full year after its announcement and the still don't have the first thing you need. A director. I'll be the guy in the corner not holding his breath.

You may now begin sending your hate mail.

Ok, everyone around here knows how much I love Jackie Chan. I talk big about the guy all the time... so it's only fair that I mention something negatice about the dude when something like this comes up. The folks over at Yahoo News give us the follwoing:

An apparently intoxicated Jackie Chan disrupted a concert by Taiwanese singer-songwriter Jonathan Lee in Hong Kong and exchanged insults with the audience, a news report said Tuesday.

Ming Pao Daily News said Chan suddenly jumped on stage at the concert Monday night and demanded a duet with Lee. He then tried to conduct the band but stopped and restarted the music several times, Ming Pao said.

Oh my sweet goodness. Chan is usually known for being so polite and cordial. This is pretty out of charachter.

And my friends wonder why I don't drink. :P

Apparently Warner Bros. has put out the word that in order for it to green light a sequel to Superman Returns (Which I really hope they do cause I went out and bought the Supermanreturns2.com domain name and I was hoping to get 50 billion dollars for it), this film will have to pull in $200 million domestically.

It's also being said that if there is indeed a sequel, then it's budget would be cut down.  The good folks over at TMZ give us this:

Talent agency insiders, speaking on the condition of anonymity, insist that Horn (Warner Exec.) is so concerned about being burned financially by ionospheric "Superman" special effects costs that any sequel's budget would cost far less than Bryan Singer's quarter billion dollar baby: a meager $150 million. That's a whopping $35 million less than its predecessor was green lit at, and roughly $55 million less than "Superman Returns" alleged final negative cost.
Can anyone really blame him?  Right now Superman Returns is sitting about about $150 million domestically (a terrific number for any movie in 13 days, but clearly not record breaking).  Does it have the legs to make $200 million?  Actually yes it could.

Aside from POTC 2 (which everyone on the planet has seen already), there really isn't anything major that would threaten it until at least the 21st.  By then it is possible that it could crack that $200 number... but it's not a lock by a long shot.

However, I should mention here that while I LOVED Superman Returns, I've got to say that I'm not really sure where that $220 million production budget (not including marketing) went.  Yes there were some terrific special effect in Superman Returns... but nothing outrageously spectacular... and not really too much of them.  I've never been really sure why this film cost so much more to make than say... X-Men 3.

I don't think you need a PHD to know there will be a Superman Returns 2... however... I don't see why having it's budget cut would be a bad thing.  That film should have only run $150 million to make in the first place.  Bryan Singer (One of the best in the business) needs to learn how to work within a budget a little more.  Thanks to Dave for the heads up.
